Play is fun, but it’s also a complex tool that children use to navigate the world. That’s why we offer play-based occupational, speech, and physical therapy to families looking for play therapy in Kansas City.
Did you know there are multiple stages of play development? These stages involve exploring, being creative, and having fun—the building blocks here at Playabilities!
Unoccupied Play | 0 to 3 months
- Your baby makes a lot of movement with their arms, legs, hands, feet, etc.
- You can place your baby in a safe space on the floor with something interesting to look at
- Your child takes in sights and sounds and can maintain shared attention
Solitary Play | 0 to 2 years
- Your child is content to play alone
- You can give them toys with buttons to push or levers to pull
Onlooker Play | 2 years
- Your child watches others playing, but doesn’t play with them yet
- With your child on your lap, let them observe when another child is present
Parallel Play | 2+ years
- Your child plays alongside or near others
- You can set up a play space so the children can play near each other
- Your child may prefer to play independently with their preferred play materials and hesitate sharing toys
Associate Play | 3 to 4 years
- Your child starts to interact with others during play
- You can use a toy for two (like a kitchen set or cars), so playmates can talk to each other while playing
Cooperative Play | 4+ years
- Your child plays with others while sharing ideas
- You can play a game with instructions that both children can follow
