4th of July Tips

Fourth of July - Playabilities

As we approach the 4th of July, we recognize that the excitement and unpredictability of the holiday can be overwhelming for many children. Here are some therapist-recommended strategies to help families prepare and support their child during the celebrations.

  • Noise-canceling headphones – Help reduce distress from loud fireworks and crowds. Bring them to all events, even if fireworks are not expected.
  • Comfort food – Pack familiar snacks or meals to provide a sense of routine and comfort during outings.
  • Social stories – Use visuals and simple language to walk your child through what the day might look like (e.g., cookouts, parades, fireworks), helping to reduce uncertainty. Reach out to your therapist or your location-specific inbox for support in getting this created for your child!
  • Priming with expectations – Talk in advance about what will happen, who will be there, and what your child can do if they feel overwhelmed, nervous, or uncomfortable.
  • Direct teaching about firework safety – Teach children about staying a safe distance away, not touching unexploded fireworks, and always being near an adult.
  • Be kind to yourself and flexible with plans – It’s okay if things don’t go as expected! Prioritize your child’s comfort and emotional needs, and give yourself permission to adjust or leave early if needed.

Supporting your child with proactive strategies can help the entire family enjoy a safer and more peaceful holiday!
