Why Summer Can Feel Dysregulating for Kids

Summer can bring excitement and freedom, but for many children it can also create emotional and sensory challenges. School routines disappear, sleep schedules shift, vacations interrupt predictability, and children often experience more sensory input than usual. For children who thrive on structure, those changes can feel overwhelming.

Dysregulation can show up differently depending on the child. Some children may appear more emotional, impulsive, or anxious. Others may become more withdrawn, fatigued, or sensory-seeking. Often, families notice increased difficulty with transitions, meltdowns, attention, or emotional flexibility during the summer months.

The good news is that supporting regulation does not require a perfectly structured summer schedule. Small routines and predictable supports can make a significant difference. Movement opportunities, visual schedules, sensory breaks, outdoor play, hydration, and sleep consistency can all help support nervous system regulation.

Occupational therapy can also provide support for children who experience significant sensory or emotional regulation challenges. Therapists help identify each child’s sensory needs and build individualized strategies that support participation, confidence, and emotional success.

At Playabilities, we believe summer should still feel joyful and manageable for families. Sometimes small adjustments and support systems can help children feel safer, calmer, and more connected throughout seasonal transitions.
