Summer isn’t a break from growth - it’s a fun opportunity to build skills, confidence, and momentum

Summer Is a Powerful Window for Growth: Why Therapy Camps and Boosters Work

When school routines shift and the pressure of homework and long days ease, children often have more room to handle big feelings. They are less fatigued, more playful, and more open. From a pediatric therapy perspective, that matters. The brain grows through repetition, meaningful engagement, and positive emotion. Summer gives us the space to design experiences that combine all three.

At Playabilities, summer brings energy, excitement, and lots of joy. You will hear giggles in the hallways, music in the gym, and kids cheering each other on during obstacle courses. Therapists will be celebrating the tiny wins that will lead to big confidence. That joy is not an added bonus; it is the heart and foundation of what we do.

Research in pediatric motor learning and rehabilitation shows that repeated, higher frequency practice over a short window strengthens skill development and retention. Neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to form new connections, is enhanced when learning is emotionally engaging and meaningful. In other words, when children feel safe and are having fun, their brains are in a better space for growth.

That is why our camps run two times per week for four consecutive weeks. Eight sessions create momentum and consistency. When families choose back-to-back months, children can experience up to sixteen sessions of fun and focused growth. Skills are not introduced once and revisited weeks later; they are practiced again and again in creative, fun, and engaging ways.

Our camps are intentionally varied. Some focus on feeding exploration, some on emotional regulation, and flexible behavior. Some focus on movement, coordination, and body awareness, while others target social connection and communication. What our camps have in common is that they are all grounded in a strengths-based and neuro-affirming philosophy. We are not trying to change who your child is. We are supporting their nervous system, honoring their sensory preferences, and building skills in ways that respect their individuality.

There is something uniquely powerful about learning alongside peers. Children naturally observe, imitate, and learn from one another. In a structured group, they could see a friend try a new food and feel brave enough to try it, too. If they watch another child take a deep breath after frustration they may begin to try that strategy themselves. They are able to practice turn taking, problem solving, and recovering from mistakes in real time.

While one-to-one therapy remains deeply valuable and medically necessary for many children, opportunities for peer engagement in that setting are not always consistent. A formalized camp cohort creates stability for peer-led fun. The same small group of children show up together twice a week, allowing familiarity to build and relationships to form. While confidence gradually builds, the social environment becomes predictable, which helps children take risks and grow their skills.

We intentionally keep our camp groups small, with two therapists and an aide supporting each session. That allows us to individualize within the group while preserving the magic of peer interaction. It is playful, meaningful, and fun while also being structured and purposeful.

For families already in a plan of care, camps can complement ongoing therapy in a dynamic way. For families new to Playabilities, camps can be a welcoming entry point into skill building within a supportive, relationship driven environment.

For families who prefer individual support, we also offer summer boosters. Boosters are focused, short term one-to-one services designed to accelerate progress during the summer months. With fewer school demands, children can often tolerate and benefit from increased frequency and intensity. That concentrated repetition can lead to meaningful growth before fall routines begin again.

Summer gives children time, and when time is paired with connection, repetition, and joy, growth often follows.

Growth does not have to slow down in the summer. With the right amount of laughter, play, and intention, it accelerates.
